Console access for applications
You can open a console session to an application running on a device from the web console or the Flight Control CLI. Red Hat Edge Manager provides two types of console access for VM applications: serial console and VNC console.

For VM applications, Red Hat Edge Manager provides two console types that connect to the VM guest, not to the device host:
- Serial console
- A text-based terminal connected to the VM guest’s virtual serial port (
ttyS0). The serial console provides emergency debugging access when SSH is unavailable, such as during boot failures, kernel panics, or network misconfiguration. Available for Linux VM guests by default. Windows guests can use the serial console if EMS/SAC is configured in the guest. - VNC console
- A graphical display connection to the VM guest. VNC is useful for VMs that require a graphical interface or for debugging issues that do not produce serial output.
The Red Hat Edge Manager web console supports serial console only. To use VNC, open the session from the CLI and connect with an external VNC viewer.
