Understand your savings opportunity estimate
To help you optimize your budget, the cost management system calculates a savings opportunity. Your savings opportunity is an estimate of how much money you could save by reducing unused resources.
- Pod: the smallest deployable units of computing that you can create and manage in OpenShift. A group of one or more containers, with shared storage and network resources, and a specification for how to run the containers.
- Node: a physical or virtual computer that runs and hosts multiple pods
- Cluster: a collection of nodes connected together to work as a single unified system
Cost management uses the following equation to calculate your savings opportunity estimate:
Savings opportunity estimate for node x = (cost of node x) * (1 - total node usage/total request)
- Cost of node x: $3
- Total node usage: 3 units
- Total request: 8 units
Savings opportunity estimate for node x = $3 * (1 - 3/8)Savings opportunity estimate for node x = $1.875

Because cost management currently calculates savings opportunity at the node level, there are two extreme cases that could influence the estimate:
- The spread of pod efficiency ratios: the greater the variance in efficiency from pod to pod, the larger the discrepancy between the exact savings opportunity and the estimated savings opportunity.
- The distribution of pod cost: if the least efficient pods also carry the highest cost, the estimate’s error decreases; if the reverse is true, and the most efficient pods carry the highest costs, the estimate’s error increases.

- You are logged in to the Hybrid Cloud Console.
- You have resource optimization for OpenShift enabled and configured.
Procedure Copy linkLink copied!
- Navigate to Cost Management > Optimizations.
- Click the Efficiency tab. This tab contains the CPU workload efficiency and the Memory workload efficiency tables that display the savings opportunity estimate.
- Use the Group-by and Filter menus to organize and narrow your data by project or cluster.
