Resource optimization current and recommended configurations

You can use the information provided on the cost management resource optimization page to reduce costs or improve the performance of your OpenShift workloads.

The cost management resource optimization page for the selected OpenShift container or project displays the current configuration as CPU cores in millicpu (m) and memory in mebibytes (MiB) that your current configuration uses, listed by resource limits and resource requests. It also provides recommended configurations based on your resource use over the selected time period.

Optimizing for cost uses less resources and is useful when you want to save money. Optimizing for performance results in higher costs because it uses more resources so the application does not create a bottleneck.

Cost optimization recommendations are generated when CPU usage is at or above the 60th percentile and memory usage is at the 100th percentile. Performance optimization recommendations are generated when CPU usage is at or above the 98th percentile and when memory usage is at the 100th percentile.

Resource optimization box plots

Cost management resource optimization uses box plots to help you visualize CPU and memory use compared to recommended settings.

There are two box plots on the Current optimization tab and two on the Performance optimization tab. The box plots use light blue boxes to depict actual usage, a dark blue line to depict recommended request settings, and a brown line to depict recommended limit settings. These visualizations can help you understand resource distribution and identify outliers in your data.

The time range is displayed in four quarters, along the bottom of the box plots. It is determined by the range selected in the View optimizations based on menu.
